We are delighted to announce that OUR Place (Open United Recovery) has been awarded a significant grant through the RFA#48: Expansion of Peer Run Organizations (MHA-FY24-Recovery Supports). This grant, provided by Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS), signifies a monumental achievement for our organization and the community we serve.
OUR Place has always been committed to ensuring recovery is accessible and sustainable for everyone in Portage County. With this grant, we are poised to expand our services and introduce an innovative new program: OATH (Older Adults Thriving and Healing).
OATH is a groundbreaking initiative specifically tailored to provide comprehensive peer support services for older adults in our community. This demographic often encounters unique challenges in their recovery journey, such as isolation, physical health issues, and a lack of tailored resources. OATH aims to bridge this gap by offering:
Peer Support Services: Seasoned mentors who understand the recovery journey will provide continuous guidance and support.
Specialized Programs: Tailored activities and support groups focusing on the specific needs of older adults.
Community Integration: Establishing a supportive community environment to reduce isolation and foster social engagement.
Holistic Approach: Addressing both physical and mental health needs to ensure a well-rounded recovery process.
Under the leadership of Dr. Steven Stein, a retired geriatric psychologist with lived experience and trained in Peer Support, along with Patrick Heenan, a Certified Peer Supporter who found recovery in his late 60s, OATH has commenced its meetings at OUR Place. This group convenes every Tuesday at 3 pm, providing a consistent and supportive space for older adults in recovery.
The Significance of This Grant
This grant not only acknowledges the hard work and dedication of OUR Place but also underscores the crucial role of peer-run organizations in the recovery ecosystem. By expanding our services through the OATH program, we can now reach a vital segment of our community that has long been underserved.
Gratitude to Our Supporters
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our partners, supporters, and the community for their steadfast support. Special appreciation goes to the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Portage County, Hope Town Ohio Recovery Housing, The Haven of Portage County, MedMark Treatment Centers, and all individuals who contributed letters of support for our grant application. Your belief in our mission and active involvement have been pivotal to this success.
What Comes Next?
The launch of the OATH program represents a new chapter for OUR Place. We eagerly anticipate the positive impact it will have on older adults in our community. This program is just the beginning of many more initiatives aimed at making recovery accessible, sustainable, and inclusive for everyone.
Stay tuned for further updates on the launch of OATH and other upcoming programs at OUR Place. Together, we can transform lives and cultivate a stronger, healthier community.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Warm regards,
Jessika Easterling
